35 Professionally Made Flash Websites for Your Inspiration

by Ranju Chaudhary on Aug.05, 2010, under inspiration

Since Flash came into our life, there have always been “two camps”: Flash-lovers and Flash-haters. All of the “lovers” and “haters” have their own reasons of loving or hating it.  As for me, all the disputes on this theme have no sense, until we’ve got a really worthy substitute for Flash.

There are tons of information written on the subjects “to use or not to use…”, “advantages and disadvantages…”, etc. I think it’s not the point Flash is good or bad, – it just certainly has its place – that’s it. And the “members” of the “two camps” should understand that there is nothing to argue about. If you are a photographer or designer and you need motion, interactivity, – Flash will definitely be the right choice. If you wish to express your originality, with Flash you will achieve that. But if your website is about delivering straight up information, then CSS/(X)HTML will work good for you. In other words, HTML is great for informative websites, and Flash is perfect for creating unforgettable effects.

Since I myself am a little partial to Flash, this showcase will not be devoted to “the best HTML websites”:)

The Flash websites I have selected for this post are all professionally developed; they are not only visually attractive, but are also functionally correct, load in a few seconds and disprove most of the existing mistaken opinions as for Flash that have been spread around, i.e.:

  1. All Flash websites load slowly;
  2. All Flash websites have long loading intros;
  3. It’s impossible to use SWFWheel on Flash websites;
  4. You cannot select and copy the text content on Flash websites;
  5. All Flash websites have music blaring starting automatically;
  6. Flash websites are bad for SEO (be sure it is a myth);
  7. It’s impossible to use the “back” button; etc.

So, view the showcase and draw a conclusion yourself…

10 HTML5 Demos to Make You Forget About Flash

by Ranju Chaudhary on Jul.31, 2010, under tutorials

We have been hearing a lot lately about how Flash is a dying technology and how it’ll soon be replaced by HTML5. Personally, I think that it will slowly replace Flash for some things, but Flash will always have a place, especially for developing complex games and rich internet applications. If you’ve yet to see what HTML5 can do, I’ve rounded up 10 demos that show off some of its capabilities.

So what do you think – will HTML5 replace Flash?

Firefox 3.6.4 Released: Flash No Longer Crashes Your Browser

by Ranju Chaudhary on Jun.23, 2010, under Latest Web Technologies, What's Happening?

After some delays, Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6.4, the newest version of the popular web browser. It comes with one big addition: protection against crashing due to third-party plugins, most notably Adobe Flash.

The updated browser, which you can download here, comes with dozens of bug fixes and stability upgrades. What the average user will care about most though is FirefoxFirefox crash protection, something that is a prominent feature of Google ChromeGoogle Chrome.

Crash protection utilizes out-of-process plugins technology to run third-party plugins (specifically Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight) in a separate process. In the past, a plugin crash would take down your entire Firefox browser. With crash protection however, “the browser will stay running while the portions of websites controlled by the plugin will be disabled.” It only takes a refresh to restart the plugin.

There is a catch, though: only WindowsWindows and LinuxLinux users have access to crash protection. According to Mozilla, making crash protection available to Mac OS X users would require major changes to Firefox’s infrastructure. However, the non-profit promises that it will become available for Mac users in Firefox 4, which should ship by the end of the year.

Adobe Flash 10.1 Now Available for Download

by Ranju Chaudhary on Jun.11, 2010, under Latest Web Technologies, What's Happening?

The Adobe Flash platform saw significant improvements today with the launch of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.

According to a blog post from Adobe’s Flash team, the new Flash Player 10.1 features improved performance, power management and video features. The player has also been given new multi-touch and private browsing functionality. The overall viewing experience for Mac users has been fine-tuned as well.

The new Flash player should deliver an altogether smoother, higher-quality experience for web video, with better buffering, peer-to-peer video and online streaming video.

Adobe also says more details on Flash 10.1 for mobile devices will be announced later this month, but we’re not holding our breath for fantastic iPhone news.

As for AIR, this product was released two years ago and hasn’t seen a major update until now. AIR 2 improves overall performance and HTML support while reducing memory usage. AIR 2 also includes some new APIs for developers.
