Asus to Launch App Store for Netbooks

While Asus is making headlines in the tablet category, it’s also revamping its netbook offerings.
The company announced today that it will be opening an app store for netbooks later this year.
The store is reminiscent of the Intel AppUp Center. The Asus app store will be a destination for netbook owners to find netbook-specific or netbook-optimized software that will play nicely on smaller screens, and with the OSes and processors an Asus netbook might sport. The software will come preloaded on all the company’s Windows
netbooks starting later this year.

In addition to highlighting netbook-friendly applications with an app store, the company is displaying its new 4G Eee PCs at trade show Computex. Asus will also soon be releasing its MeeGo Linux
-running netbook in 2011.
This news comes to our attention just hours after Asus unveiled a line of three tablets at Computex, a gadget-focused trade show. This line includes 12- and 10-inch models as well as an e-reader.
While it’s cool to see the company presenting a solid slate of iPad competitors, it’s also good to know they’ll continue to support non-tablet devices. The iPad is making a dent in netbook sales, but this could just be a passing statistic rather than a trend that will culminate in the obsolescence of netbooks altogether.
What do you think: Will revamping netbook offerings revitalize the netbook market? Or are these devices doomed as the march of the tablets continues?

Today, Mac Stories posted a video that an unnamed source sent them, showing the iPad App Store being utilized, as well as a selection of apps, including Twitterrific, OmniGraffle
and OmniGraph Sketcher and Real Racing. The video comes in the wake of a bevy of leaked screenshots of the store posted by BGR earlier today.
In light of delayed shipping dates and and dwindling supplies, it’s likely that anticipation will only continue to mount as folks wait to get their hands on the fabled ‘Pad. We expect more leaks in the coming days. Yikes, this is just like when we used to peek at our Christmas presents in November — but with fewer socks.
